Music from the Heart

Giovanni Marradi composer and pianist

For pianist and composer Giovanni Marradi, music isn’t a competition. It’s a way to connect with people, and a way to discover who you are.

That belief shapes both his performances and his teaching. When students ask how to become like him, Giovanni’s answer is direct: “Don’t become me. You’re not me. Become you.”

He encourages young musicians to develop their own interpretations instead of simply copying someone else. During master classes in China, he urged students to lose their fear, treat the instrument as a friend, and find their own musical voices.

His own career has taken him to international stages, including Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. In 1997, a chance to appear on QVC opened another door. His recordings found a huge audience through television, teaching him that reaching listeners is one challenge – and building the right professional relationships to take a career further is another.

For Giovanni, though, the heart of music is more personal than sales or acclaim. He describes playing as a relationship: a message that begins within the musician and reaches the listener. If that connection breaks, the music loses something essential.

He also remembers a remarkable connection with Frank Sinatra, who invited him into his world after hearing him play. Giovanni’s story is a reminder that a career can be shaped not just by talent, but by the people who recognize something in us.

And what about the future of music in an age of artificial intelligence? Giovanni believes technology can do remarkable things, but a machine can never replace the human soul.

His advice applies far beyond music: don’t spend your life trying to be someone else. Find what you love, bring your own individuality to it, and become yourself.
