Physician. Educator. Historian. Still asking questions.

Tim Garson

Dr. Arthur "Tim" Garson has spent much of his career asking questions. As a pediatric cardiologist, university leader, health-policy advocate, and educator, he has worked at the intersection of medicine, education, and public policy. He served as provost of the University of Virginia and dean of its School of Medicine, has taught or lectured on all seven continents, and is the author of hundreds of publications and multiple books.

Then came a different question:

What should an educated person actually know about world history?

The question bothered Tim enough that he decided to do something about it.

The result is Five Thousand Years of Controversies: A Family's Journey Through World History, a 700-page history told through fictional family dinner conversations. Instead of simply presenting historical facts, Tim puts the arguments on the table – and lets readers wrestle with them.

That's what interested us about Tim! He had already accomplished a great deal, but after all of that, he was still willing to say:

"I don't know enough about this. I'm going to learn."
